If You Run One Step, You ARE a Runner

It seems like over the last few weeks I’ve had more conversations with folks that want to start running, but don’t know where to start, what kind of goals to set, or they simply just don’t feel like they can.  Trust me, if I can, YOU can too!

I started running back in high school, so I’ve got about 14 years (eek!) of running behind me and if you’ve read my blog for any amount of time, you know that I have a love/hate relationship with running.  I think it’s the most effective yet the most strenuous and difficult exercise out there and I think staying motivated is one of the hardest parts of being a runner.  It’s all mental, trust me!

There are so many good free websites and apps out there that can help ANYONE become a runner and achieve any goal that you set.

Some of my favorites

Couch to 5K-One of my favorite plans (also comes in app format) that I believe if I was just starting out, I would definitely utilize as it starts you out slowly and combines walking and jogging for various time periods.  By the end of 9 weeks, you would be able to run a 5K!

Hal Higdon Training Plans-I have been a big fan of all the Hal Higdon training programs, and used his Novice 2 Half Marathon training program when I trained and ran my first (and only) half marathon last year.  His plans also come in app form and his website contains training programs for 5K, 8K, 10K, 15K and 10 miles, Half-Marathons, Marathons, and Post Marathons, as well as Triathlon training and walking training.

Runner’s World-As a current subscriber to Runner’s World magazine, I feel like I would be doing them an injustice if I did not recommend them as well.  Each month, they feature some type of training program for some type of race/fitness level and they are always very well researched with results.  I really liked this 8 week beginner’s program featured on their website but they offer 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, and Marathon training programs as well and their website is also full of all kinds of running tips like running for cold weather, stretching, pace calculators, etc.

Workout Playlist-If I am not running in some super scenic place (and sometimes even if I am) I have to have some type of music to keep my mind off the thud, thud, thud noise of my feet (It really is all mental!) so here is a link to one of my favorite blogs to read, Peanut Butter Fingers and her amazing playlists that she has put together.  I am a huge lover of all kinds of music anyway, so putting together playlists for races or just an everyday run is always fun for me and switching the music up keeps my mind from focusing on the fact that I feel like I’m going to pass out halfway through my run.

Hope some of my favorite training plans/tips can help because I know they have definitely helped me over the last few years and if you have any tips or suggestions, please share!  Happy Monday!
