139th Kentucky Derby

Being a born and raised Kentucky girl, I would be remiss if I did not say a big congratulations to the winner of the supper muddy 139th Kentucky Derby, Orb.  Congratulations Orb and Louisville native, Shug McGaughey!  I had picked Java’s War (just because the name supported my coffee love) and Andy had picked Normandy Invasion (just because he liked the name).  I don’t know if it’s my love for animals in general or the horse culture ingrained in my home state, but I always love watching the beautiful horses as they prance across the television screen in their regal way.

We started this Derby day with Starbucks and ran around with a now 48 hour fever free Rylnn and despite the weather reports of an all day rain fest, it didn’t rain once!  It was quite a bit colder than it has been, so we weren’t able to spend as much time outside, but we did find some mud puddles (of course) got to swing a little, watch Papa bush-hog a field, and play a little hide and seek.

We decided to head to Paducah to grab an early supper at Flamingo Row and if you’re ever in the West KY area, I highly recommend it.  Always a favorite with my family, it’s a very different Caribbean soul type restaurant/café atmosphere that specializes in their Fillymingos, which are stuffed breads and they also have all kinds of sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, salads, and hamburgers.

They also have a giant iguana (which Rylnn is super infatuated with) and he gets an iguana coloring page, always a plus with a 2 ½ year old boy.  This evening Andy had the Voodoo Burger, Rylnn had the cheese stuffed kid’s Fillymingo with fries, and I had the Boola Bites (sliders) and of course the little loaf of bread they bring to the table that’s a little garlicky but wonderful!

By the time we got back home, I had just a sliver of daylight left and took advantage completing a 3 mile run just in time to see the sun sink over the top of the trees.  Now time to relax and enjoy a nice Saturday night at home 🙂

The inside of that restaurant looks so fun! I hadn’t picked Orb to win but it was a great race to watch 🙂 I’m not from KY but since moving here the Kentucky Derby has a whole new feel than it did in Minnesota. We would always go to Derby parties but here I feel like everything shuts down around the area for the big event.
